Job Description

Position Summary:
The Clinical Research Nurse serves as an integral member of the site and study team.

This position provides excellent patient care to research participants by adhering to institutional policies and procedures as well as strict research Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines. The Clinical Research Nurse is required to make decisive decisions with rapid response to urgent situations. Must multi-task while conducting daily activities such as physical exams, placing IV’s, administering investigational drug, performing procedures such as IV Glucose Tolerance Tests (IVGTT’s), ECG’s, Vital Signs, specimen collection and processing labs. The Clinical Research Nurse must be able to prioritize assigned duties under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Nurse Manager.

The Frontiers Clinical and Translational Science Unit (CTSU) is in the new state-of-the-art Clinical Research Center (CRC) at the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC); Funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH), one of only 62 Clinical and Translational Science Awards in the nation, the CTSU provides the opportunity for you to be an active participant in growing the research endeavors of the medical center and affiliate regional institutions.

Job Duties:
• Work primarily Monday through Friday, 8 hour days, with occasional overnights.
• Oversee and monitor the well-being and safety of study participants; identify Adverse Events (AEs) and provide proper documentation and reporting of all AEs to study team.
• Ensure all required consent forms are obtained prior to any research activities.
• Provide clear and comprehensive documentation of study visit activities while adhering to the guidelines of Good Clinical Practice.
• Operate and maintain research equipment according to departmental policy.
• Support and encourage a cooperative work environment.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
• Perform procedure and/or administer Investigational Drugs in strict compliance to the study protocol, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), and other state and local regulations as applicable.

Required Qualifications:
• Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Kansas.
• At least 1 year experience in acute care nursing.
• Skillful in placing IV’s.
• Proficient in administering IV infusions.
• Ability to establish priorities.
• Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot.
• Ability to communicate well with people at all levels.
• Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
• Adhere to institutional and departmental policies.
• Ability to work flexible shifts.
• Current BLS certification.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in clinical research.
• Recent Emergency Room or Critical Care experience.
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
• Current ACLS certification.
